What is kava?

The Pacific's original
wind-down.

Kava plant leaves

The root of the Pacific

A pepper-family plant, shared for generations.

Kava (Piper methysticum) is a leafy shrub from the South Pacific. For thousands of years, islanders in Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa have ground its root into a drink shared at ceremonies, celebrations and the end of the day. It's still the national drink of Fiji.

  • Kavalactones do the work. These natural compounds in the root are what create kava's calm, and the gentle tingle on your lips.
  • Noble kava only. "Noble" varieties are the ones traditionally chosen for daily drinking. We don't use anything else.
  • Calm, not intoxicated. Kava is traditionally valued for relaxation that leaves your head clear and your conversation flowing.

What does it feel like?

A long exhale,
with your head still clear.

Everyone's a little different, but here's how most people describe it.

First sip

The tingle.

A light, peppery numbness on your lips and tongue. That's the kavalactones, and it fades in a few minutes.

20–40 minutes

The shoulders drop.

A warm, easy calm settles in. Racing thoughts get quieter, conversation gets easier.*

With regular use

It gets better every week.

Kava is known for “reverse tolerance”: unlike alcohol, many people find they feel more from the same serving after a few sessions. If your first stick feels subtle, give it a week.*

You'll feel

Relaxed · Present · Social · Unhurried · Clear

You won't feel

Drunk · Foggy · Wired · Hungover the next day

The science of kavalactones

How kava chills you out.

Kava's calm comes from kavalactones, a family of natural compounds concentrated in the root. Every stick of Instant Calm delivers 200mg of them. Here's what they do once they reach your brain:*

  • They work with your brain's "brake pedal." Kavalactones interact with GABA receptors, the same system your brain uses to quiet itself down, helping you ease into a relaxed state.*
  • They settle overactive signals. Kavalactones gently temper how readily nerve cells fire, which is why a busy, racing mind starts to slow down.*
  • They keep your head clear. Unlike alcohol, kava is traditionally enjoyed for a calm that leaves you present, social and in control.
Relaxation*Mood support*Social ease*Better sleep*
Gentle by designNo alcohol, no hangover, and not habit-forming. Most people find kava very well tolerated; the most common effect is that harmless tingle on your lips. As with any supplement, read the warnings below and check with your doctor if you take medication.

Our story

Hi, we're Jamie and Oliver.

Kava changed how we deal with stress. For the first time, we could feel calm and present, and still completely ourselves.

The catch was that traditional kava is a hassle to prepare, hard to dose consistently, and wildly variable in quality. So we started Kavalah to build the kava drink we actually wanted.

Instant Calm is the result. A full serving of noble kava sits at the center, backed by five supporting ingredients at doses that mean something, in a single stick you can take to the office, on a flight or to a friend's place.

How to take it

Tear. Pour. Stir. Sip.

Tearing open an Instant Calm stick pack

Step 1 · Tear

One stick is one serving. Keep a few in your bag, desk or glovebox so calm is always close at hand.

Pouring Instant Calm into a glass of iced water

Step 2 · Pour

Empty it into 6–8oz of cold water, coconut water or juice. Prefer a milder taste? Use a little more liquid.

Sipping Instant Calm over ice

Step 3 · Stir & sip

Stir well and enjoy it over ice. Kava is a fine root powder, so swirl the glass as you go. A light tingle on the lips is completely normal.

Harvesting noble kava root

Fiji-grown, hand-harvested

Noble kava root.
At the heart of every stick.

Our kava comes from noble kava plants grown for 5 to 7 years on family farms in the volcanic soils of Fiji, where kava is the national drink and has been shared for generations. The root is harvested by hand, then standardized to 10% kavalactones so every stick delivers the same calm, every time.

5–7
Years in the ground before harvest

That time is what produces the full kavalactone profile. Younger plants give weaker, less complex root.

200
mg of kavalactones in every stick

2g of noble kava standardized to 10% kavalactones. No guesswork, no weak batches.

1
Stick, one measured serving

No scooping, no guesswork. Tear one open wherever you are.

No question too small

Frequently asked.

What's in each stick?

A full 2g of noble kava root extract standardized to 10% kavalactones (200mg), plus five supporting ingredients: magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, ashwagandha, lemon balm and rhodiola. Every dose is printed on the box, with no proprietary blends.

What does it feel like?

Most people describe a warm, easy calm with a clear head: relaxed, present, and still social. You may feel a light tingle on your lips from the kavalactones. It's not intoxicating, and there's no hangover.

How fast does it work?

Most people notice kava within 20–40 minutes, a little faster on an empty stomach. Kava is also known for “reverse tolerance”: many people feel more from the same serving after a few sessions, so give it a week before you judge it. The adaptogens (ashwagandha and rhodiola) support your stress response with consistent daily use over several weeks.*

How many sticks should I take?

Start with one stick. You can have a second later in the day if you'd like, but don't take more than two in 24 hours.

When's the best time to take it?

Whenever you want to shift gears: after work, before a social event, on a stressful travel day, or as an evening wind-down. Many people enjoy it daily.

Will it make me sleepy?

Instant Calm is designed for clear-headed calm, and rhodiola is there to keep things balanced. Everyone responds differently, so try your first stick at home in the evening and don't drive until you know how it affects you.

What does it taste like?

Instant Calm comes in Piña Colada: a subtle pineapple and coconut mocktail flavor that smooths out kava's naturally earthy, peppery edge. It's great with plain cold water, and even better over ice or mixed into coconut water.

Is kava safe?

Kava has been enjoyed across the Pacific for centuries, and we use only noble kava varieties. That said, the FDA has advised that a rare but serious risk of liver injury may be associated with kava-containing supplements. Ask a health professional before use if you have or have had liver problems, and stop use and see a doctor if you notice symptoms like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

Can I drink alcohol with it?

No. Don't combine Instant Calm with alcohol. Many people use it instead of a drink.

I'm on medication. Can I take it?

Please check with your doctor first. Kava, ashwagandha and other botanicals can interact with some medications, including sedatives, anti-anxiety and thyroid medications.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No. Instant Calm is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or by anyone under 18.

Is it habit-forming?

Kava isn't considered habit-forming and has been enjoyed daily in Pacific Island cultures for generations. As with anything, listen to your body and use as directed.

Is kava legal?

Yes. Kava is legal in the United States. If you're traveling internationally, check the local rules first.

Warnings: The FDA advises that a potential risk of rare, but severe, liver injury may be associated with kava-containing dietary supplements. Ask a healthcare professional before use if you have or have had liver problems, frequently use alcoholic beverages, or are taking any medication. Stop use and see a doctor if you develop symptoms that may signal liver problems (e.g., unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools, yellow eyes or skin). Not for use by persons under 18, or by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Not for use with alcoholic beverages. Excessive use, or use with products that cause drowsiness, may impair your ability to operate a vehicle or dangerous equipment.
